Description

The Counseling Center of Hobart and William Smith Colleges is committed to promoting the well-being of the student body through providing a variety of services including: free and confidential individual and group counseling, walk-in consultations, emergency psychological services, and psycho-educational outreach programming. The Director's responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, being an active provider in all areas of the Center's clinical and psycho-educational service, providing the Center with administrative direction and oversight, and collaborating with other on- and off-campus departments/agencies to ensure a high level of care for our students. The successful candidate will have demonstrated an ability to focus on both the provision of direct clinical care and an interest in providing significant community outreach to address students' personal and social concerns in hopes of helping them achieve satisfying educational and life experiences.

Essential Responsibilities:

Provide overall leadership and direction for the Counseling Center, including supervision and evaluation of staff, strategic planning, budget management, and oversight of clinical operations.
Deliver direct clinical services, including individual and group counseling.
Oversee and participate in the on-call rotation, serving as secondary clinical support in coordination with ProtoCall and ensuring effective after-hours crisis response.
Manage clinical case assignment and monitor service utilization to ensure timely access, appropriate level-of-care decisions, and equitable service delivery.
Lead and coordinate crisis intervention education for campus partners and student leaders.
Partner with Health Services and Psychiatry to support integrated care, including consultation regarding psychopharmacological treatment and coordinated student support plans.
Serve as primary liaison to community providers and referral networks to facilitate continuity of care and higher levels of treatment when appropriate.
Lead staff development initiatives, including supervision, performance management, and ongoing professional training aligned with best practices in college mental health.
Collaborate with campus partners to design and implement outreach, prevention programming, and educational initiatives that promote student well-being and resilience.
Utilize data, assessment, and emerging national trends in college mental health to evaluate service effectiveness, identify student needs, and inform strategic planning and resource allocation.
Prepare reports and provide guidance to divisional leadership on patterns of utilization, trends, and opportunities to strengthen campus mental health infrastructure.
Serve as a member of the College Crisis Response Team and Behavioral Intervention Teams, advising on student risk assessment and coordinated response strategies.

Other Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours' time period. This is an in-person position with some flexibility for hybrid work during semester breaks. Salary range: $110,000-120,000

Qualifications

A doctoral degree in counseling psychology, clinical psychology or related field is required.
A New York State license is required.
Candidates should have a significant number of years of counseling experience with a portion of those years in a college counseling center, as well as a demonstrated progression of increasing responsibility within institutions of higher education.
Knowledge of student development is essential as is knowledge of current ethical, legal, and clinical training issues relevant to college mental health.
A candidate should also have the ability to plan and implement campus programming that meets outcome-based goals and supports the Colleges' strategic plan, a demonstrated commitment to proactive campus-wide outreach and relationship development, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The ability to interact sensitively with all campus constituents in a multi-cultural and diverse community is a must. Ideal candidate may have some experience in research and program assessment, but this is not required.
